February 2015 News/Events

St. John’s 2015 Vestry: Last Sunday at the annual parish meeting, three new vestry members were elected. Gwen Eberhart, Suzanne Prosise, and Mike McInnis were each elected to serve for a 3 year term. They join continuing vestry members Mike McShan, Mary Beth Maxted, Jim Hays, Kevin Pate, Lee Haney, and Effie Sandlin. Mike McShan was appointed as senior warden, Kevin Pate was chosen as junior warded, Steve Almon was chosen treasurer, and Effie Sandlin was chosen as clerk.

The Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Temple – Tomorrow Evening: There will be a special Eucharist celebrating this major Feast Day on Monday, February 2, at 6:30 p.m. Please make plans to attend this very important event in the life of our Lord and His Church.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper: Shrove Tuesday is quickly approaching, falling this year on February 17. That means St. John’s Annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is upon us at which we celebrate the end of the Epiphany Season and prepare for the Lenten Fast. This is one of three fundraisers that we do as a parish each year. Therefore, it is imperative that all who can help do so, so that it will be a success. One of the main areas where help is needed is in selling tickets! Please see Jimmy Henry to get your tickets to sell! We also need volunteers to help cook, serve, and clean up. There is a sign-up sheet in the parish hall for those who are able to volunteer.

Ash Wednesday: Our traditional Ash Wednesday service of Holy Communion with the Imposition of Ashes will be on Wednesday, February 18. There will be a Said Service at 7:00 a.m. and a Choral Service at 7:00 p.m. Please plan to worship at one of these services and then leave in silence as we contemplate the seriousness of our Lenten Fast in Christ. (Ash Wednesday is a Prayer Book Day of Obligation.)

Stations of the Cross: The object of the Stations is to help the faithful to make a spiritual pilgrimage of prayer through meditating upon the principle scenes of Christ’s sufferings and death. Join us Fridays during Lent (February 20 – March 27) at 6:00 p.m. as we observe this devotional commemoration of Christ’s Passion.

Lenten Soup Nights: Each Wednesday during Lent, we will begin with Holy Eucharist at 5:45 p.m. This will be followed at 6:30 p.m. with a soup and salad dinner in the parish hall. These meatless soup dinners are designed for us as a parish family to come together to support one another with our Lenten fasting. Please join us each Wednesday during Lent for these special dinners. There is a sign-up sheet in the Parish Hall for those wishing to help out by bring a pot of soup, or salad, or help with clean up. Lenten Soup Nights are each Wednesday from February 25 through March 25.

Introduction to the Pentateuch: The adult Sunday morning class is currently studying the Pentateuch which consists of the first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These five books form a backbone for the rest of the Old Testament and New Testament theologically and contain a theological and chronological progression. The books of the Pentateuch introduce us to God’s divine purposes and plans, and explain how sin entered the world. We also see in these books God’s response to sin, His relationship with mankind, and we gain insight into the character and nature of God. Please join us each Sunday morning at 9:15 a.m. as we examine these various themes.

Altar Flowers: The 2015 Altar Flower Calendar is now up on the bulletin board in the parish hall. Please sign up if you wish to have flowers placed on the altar in honor or memory of someone or a special event.
